um what is white pulp dare I ask?
BLuECaT, 2008-09-15 05:27:36 PDT
Originally, it was just my collection of surrogate accounts. Somehow (????) as I was adding these accounts 1 by 1, urladex automatically made them all members of this group, which is weird because I never actually created this group (????), but after I saw that occuring, I just went with it - what the hell. WhitePulp is simply a curious name of mine for books - white (paper the words are printed on) pulp (that which is used to make paper). Nothing sinister.
helpnow, 2008-09-15 05:43:52 PDT
Hmmmm so what books do you like? Do you read Neil Gaiman? He is awesome.
BLuECaT, 2008-09-15 05:46:50 PDT
Lately mostly non-fiction. But with 2 young girls now, I've not been reading like I used to. I used to read books with great vigor, one after another. I haven't read a full book in a year... <sigh> One of life's little joys that I've happily had to trade for 2 greater joys... ; )
helpnow, 2008-09-15 08:45:11 PDT
Ahhhh I understand. So what was your favorite?
BLuECaT, 2008-09-15 08:59:59 PDT
I truly keep my favorite books of all time on my desk:

Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter.
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard.
Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Mackay.

There are others, but these are important. I will buy dinner for anyone who reads all 3.
helpnow, 2008-09-15 12:36:48 PDT
No actually you weren't clear. Me being an artist I didn't know if you were talking the biography of MC Escher or Golden Braid. There is a classical writer Kurt Godel as well. I like the nature guy Hofstadter but I am not a fan of Shakespeare and have not read anything else by him because Shakespeare turns me off and he is into that.
I do love Kafka. Metamorphosis is one of my fav.
I'd like to read the Mackay one it sounds like my genre. I love to get book ideas thats why I asked. I have lots of time to read.
BLuECaT, 2008-09-16 05:48:50 PDT
<LOL> <LOL> But I provided the title of the book AND the author!!! Trust me, if you're an artist, you'll LOVE the Godel, Escher, Bach book - you'll never look at art or listen to music the same again. You HAVE TO check it out. Oustanding!!

Extraordinary Popular Delusions is a good easy read, and very entertaining, especially if you're NOT one of the sheep in our society, and BlueCat, I know from your various posts here at urladex you're not, so you'll enjoy that book... It will simply confirm for you what we already know about people and society - talks about the tulip craze and more anecdotes from across history. Crazy stuff people do when they dissappear into crowds.

And Rosencrantz is simply a funny, witty, cerebral book. I dig most of Tom Robbins' books too. I like witty, smart writers... I like it when I get caught up by a writer - I like being challenged... I like books that are so well written, I find myself constantly having to go back and re-read a section because now I see there was more to it than I caught during my first read... Tom Robbins can do that to you like no other writer I've read.
helpnow, 2008-09-16 07:33:00 PDT
Whew! Thanks a lot help.... I had to pay 15.00 for a PAPERBACK of Hofstadter! If you have a 1st edition HARD cover its worth 750.00! So how lucky are you?
And I got Wild Ducks Flying Backwards. It looks like it will give me a good idea of Robbins. It was a toss up between the Ducks and the Asian wild dog. LOL
I had to order the MacKay one but that's OK this is enough to keep me busy. But really thanks for the advice. :)

BLuECaT, 2008-09-16 21:26:04 PDT and edited on 2008-09-16 21:44:14 PDT
Holy snap! I had no clue that the hardcover was so much. It is a bit of a cult classic in some circles, so I guess it makes some sense. No, I have the softcover version. : (

Tom Robbins Jitterbug Perfume is awesome.

So? What do you think of the Godel, Escher, Bach!?? Thought provoking? Have you ever seen anything like that? Even in his references, he plays games! <LOL> Google the book, and I bet you will find some very interesting commentary to guide you... Truly one of the smartest books ever.
helpnow, 2008-09-17 05:19:42 PDT
P.S. Don't worry - Mackay's book is a simple, enjoyable read, whearas G-E-B is a mental challenge - you won't be able to read G-E-B in one sitting. ; )
helpnow, 2008-09-17 05:22:00 PDT
One sitting? How about a lifetime? Escher and I have been bitch slapped with vertigo and launched down the rabbit hole. I love it!
BlueMagnifiCat approves! Thanks Helpnow. LOL but I may need some major your tutorness I love palindromes
but as for Y=modus ponens I= modus moron. :)
BLuECaT, 2008-09-17 06:27:37 PDT
Y=modus <LOL> Awesome, eh! Now you see why I have a standing offer to buy anyone lunch who can work their way through all 3. Actually, my real life lunch offer is for the reading of 5 books, including The Encyclopedia of Technical Market Indicators by Colby... (Don't go buy it - it is brutal and a niche book, and there are probably only about 6 people in the world that enjoy it, including myself, tough anyone who plays the market SHOULD read it ; ) - not even sure if it is still in print, cost me about $100 20 years ago), plus The Art of War, which is no biggie, but an attitude changer and important. These are from my big-wig business days when I was trying so hard to impress and intimidate anyone and everyone, and I made the lunch-for-reading offer to my underlings and competitors. I never had to buy anyone lunch for the challenge, though many started. ; ) I don't try at all any more to impress anyone, 'cept my wife and kids, and I've learned that the ability to intimidate is over-rated. ; ) Anyway, no one but me has ever finished these 5 books <LOL>. Popular Delusions is a pape-turner and you will enjoy it, but it's no slouch, weighing in at 702 pages. <grin> The 3 books I initially mentioned of the 5 are the most pleasurable... Of course, there are hundreds of other books we could challenge each other with and enjoy, but G-E-B and Popular Delusions are a good start and will change the way you look at the world. <LOL> G-E-B is the 1 book that sits perched atop my computer monitor, even right now as I write this. The others are on the corner of my desk, also at arms-length. <LOL> I have 2 monitors on my desk, and the other monitor has "The Catalog of Cool" by Gene Sculatti atop it, but that is another story. <LOL><LOL> My copy of G-E-B is covered in dust, but it has always retained the primary position of honor.
helpnow, 2008-09-17 07:52:18 PDT
I understand why!! I'll keep you posted on my progress. It will be s-l-o-w. Do you go dark say Nietzsche?
BLuECaT, 2008-09-17 08:32:38 PDT
Naw, not much. When I was a student, some, but why bother now? ; ) Life is what you make of it, and I am an eternal optimist. Not naive, just optimistic and happy. Don't need Nietzsche whispering in my ear, trying to f--k me up. ; )
helpnow, 2008-09-17 08:59:16 PDT
Straight up he says some crazy chit.
BLuECaT, 2008-09-17 09:05:07 PDT
and I hope you are referring to Machiavelli and NOT Sun Tzu.
"Prince" is as far as I got.
BLuECaT, 2008-09-17 08:47:09 PDT
I always left that choice up the reader. If you need the Coles Notes Sun Tzu version, OK, better than nothing. ; )
helpnow, 2008-09-17 08:59:57 PDT
Have you read Zinns A People's History of the United States? That was my 1st eye opener.
BLuECaT, 2008-09-17 08:36:30 PDT
No... I am Canadian, so USA (sorry) was always a second consideration to CDN / INTL. I know no true Amrican could understand that. ; ) I've travelled the world, but I've still not been to LA or Las Vegas. Go figure. Right back ya, you non-travelling Americans. <LOL> Anyway, I have the book (white, red stripes verson, 688 pages, uypdated to 2001, but not after 9/11...), but I've still to crack the spine. Make you a deal, you read my books, and I'll read this (as I was writing this post, I actually honestly spied it across th room on the shelf, got up and dragged it to my desk - I shall place it in my other "office", where all men do their deep thinking, and slowly work my way through it - I did the random page test, and it looks good.

Oh, that reminds me, here's an awesome easy read, but smart book for you too: "When you ride alone, you ride with Bin Laden", by Bill Maher. I know lots of people hate him, but I love the dude. Maybe 2% of what he says annoys me because even HE thinks USA is the best country in the world (though I like his logic after you accept that given), but still, he's a great dude, and I'd love to play pool with him and shoot the shit some day. Buy this book BueCat, if you haven't already - you'll like it... He has a way of expressing a point the way I would (or would like too ; ) ), with a bit of profanity, but well spoken and accurately.
helpnow, 2008-09-17 09:12:11 PDT
HA! I love Bill and have already read it! Make sure you read Howard Zinns history you'll love it. I got to hear him lecture it was awesome! Oh and you aren't missing anything with LA and Vegas trust me and this American has been to Vancouver Montreal and Toronto. Love them all.
BLuECaT, 2008-09-17 09:23:42 PDT

A Bitch book? Now I'm confused. LOL
BLuECaT, 2008-09-16 21:55:59 PDT
Thanks Helpnow that was the book review I was wanting! I'm going to the used book store today. I love it there. I hope I can find one of your books!
So you must have liked The Iliad, Odyssey and Divine Comedy I had to read those over and over. Homer was ok but I was happy to finish his stuff. Dante is fantastic. Poetry is cool. I use to read it to my kids simplified and they'd ask, so what part of hell do we get stuck in for not cleaning our rooms. Bahahahaha
BLuECaT, 2008-09-16 09:03:58 PDT
Well they didn't have any of your suggested books at the used store so I will have to go to Barnes and Noble tonight and order it. I think I will start with the Godel, Escher, Bach book. I love having a reason to go to Barnes and Noble. I miss the Chapter book stores they have in Canada 4 stories of books!
BLuECaT, 2008-09-16 13:10:23 PDT
Have you read the latest Einstein biography? Its a big fat sucker but there is never before letters in it. It is so funny. Its great you should check it out.
